The author highlights the advantage of the Manukau City Council Parks teaching garden model has when compared to the many other types of community garden that rely on high levels of volunteerism, lack sufficient funds and where productivity is often constrained by a paucity of horticultural/gardening knowledge and adherence to woolly thinking around “organic” production when a pragmatic approach is required”.

An actual example of a failed garden which wasted valuable community resources is given.
