“It’s up to their loved ones to keep the past alive” Jim Moira. TV New item on Harry & Ila
This publication; 25 pg & 6 photos is my Uncle Harry’s Biography that I encouraged him to write.
He posted it to me in Sept 1993 and the last entry was: – “Ila is the last of her family, Having looked after me for the past 50 years it is now my turn to take over and guide our ship to where ever it may make land. ”
Between then and 1999, and The passing of a gentle man, Harry became an unlikely hero.
A battler to the end : At the time of life when pensioner should have been enjoying the twilight years in peace, comfort and security he found himself engaged in a bitter struggle against an ideologically driven government.
Harry Findlay was a hero. He took on the right wing ideologues and gave this country the human face of what user pays in health care really meant.
His courage , determination and love for his late wife showed us that we can resist unfair Government policies.
If New Zealand had 3.6million more like him, this government wouldn’t stand a chance. Good on you Harry.
He was a battler to the end … Frank Mackasy. Dunedin.
I intend to complete the story with Harry the Unlikely Hero, the story of Harry and Ila Findlay of Ahipara. Which will explain why Harry became so well known nationally. All the copy is on hand it just needs compiling. Publication date : Sometime in the future.
